Camp Sussex

For 85 years, Camp Sussex thrived as a cherished haven, catering to the needs of underprivileged and orphaned children from New York City. Founded in 1924 by a compassionate "Jewish welfare organization," the camp's noble mission was to provide a cost-free summer retreat for these children, offering them a chance to create fond memories amidst nature's embrace.

Nestled on a sprawling 215-acre property, Camp Sussex accommodated up to 1,200 campers annually. Its facilities were designed to foster a sense of belonging and joy, with 36 bunkhouses thoughtfully spread across the grounds – 18 for boys and 18 for girls. Amid the camp's picturesque landscape, campers enjoyed baseball fields, tennis and basketball courts, a recreation building, arts facility, theater, infirmary, and a charming boathouse to explore aquatic adventures.

Each cozy cabin was a home away from home for 12 campers and three counselors, who shared laughter and formed lasting bonds. Meals were shared in a large dining hall equipped with two kitchens, where the sound of camaraderie echoed during every mealtime.

In 2004, an exciting opportunity arose when Derek Jeter's foundation signed a three-year agreement to establish a special sports summer program at Camp Sussex. However, after merely a week into the program, the foundation abruptly pulled out of the agreement, leaving the camp at a crossroads.

Regrettably, in 2005, the camp's legacy faced an unfortunate turn of events as it closed its doors, impacting the lives of many children who had cherished the camp as a place of solace and joy.

However, hope emerged from the shadows when an individual purchased Camp Sussex for $850,000. Driven by a vision to restore the camp to its former glory, this benevolent soul plans to reopen the grounds, rekindling the laughter of children and the spirit of communal happiness.

With dedicated efforts, Camp Sussex will rise again, embracing a new era of providing a nurturing environment for children in need, as it once did for so many memorable years. The echoes of past summers will soon be replaced by the joyous laughter of new generations, weaving stories of friendship, growth, and cherished memories.
