Designed by Cass Gilbert, the esteemed architect renowned for iconic structures such as the U.S. Supreme Court and the Woolworth Building, the building known as Seaside has a storied past that reflects its evolving purpose and troubling history.

Originally intended to care for children suffering from tuberculosis, Seaside opened its doors in the 1930s, providing hope and healing for young patients facing a challenging illness. However, in 1958, a change in direction led to its transformation into an elderly home, catering to the needs of the elderly population for a brief period.

Over the years, Seaside underwent various name changes, each reflecting the shift in its function. It was known as Seaside Sanatorium during its tuberculosis care era, Seaside Geriatric Hospital during its service for the elderly, and Seaside Regional Center for the Mentally Disabled when it was repurposed to care for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Tragically, amidst its changing roles, dark chapters unfolded within the walls of Seaside. In the 1970s, revelations emerged about the mistreatment of patients, with some subjected to violent abuse by the staff, marking a distressing period in the facility's history. In the 1990s, an alarming increase in patient deaths raised further concerns.

As a result of these distressing incidents and the need for drastic improvements in patient care, Seaside's doors were permanently closed in 1996. The government took charge of the land and transformed it into a state park, seeking to preserve the area's natural beauty while also respecting the historical significance of the now-vacant building.

With the passage of two decades, Seaside stands as a silent witness to its tumultuous past. The architectural masterpiece, once a beacon of hope and healing, now exudes an air of mystery and melancholy, serving as a reminder of the challenges faced by its former inhabitants. As a state park, the land surrounding the building offers a serene escape, inviting visitors to enjoy nature's embrace while acknowledging the complex history that unfolded within the walls of Seaside.
